1908-2008: Centennial of the Young Turk Revolution

An international congress entitled “1908-2008: Centennial of the Young Turk Revolution” commemorating the 100th anniversary of the second Constitutional Period of the Ottoman Empire will be hosted by The Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University in Ankara, during 28-30 May 2008.
Papers will consider the place of the concept of bourgeois revolution in the social sciences, the connection between the Young Turk Revolution and bourgeois revolutions at the beginning of the 20th century, the impact of the Young Turk Revolution in the world and its influence on the Turkish Republic.

This presentation by Ara Melkonian will be the first in our new series, "The Lost Armenian Communities of Ottoman Turkey." Melkonian will use a rich tapestry of sources to visit Bahchejik, the ancestral village of his family, in western Turkey. He will recall the memory of his village for a new generation of Armenians to connect with their ancestral past.

Ara Melkonian is a Fellow at the Gomidas Institute, London, where he specializes in Armenian-English translations and works on other special projects. His recent work includes translations of Vahram Dadrian’s Forsaken Love (Taderon Press, 2006) and Raffi’s Tajkahayk, (Taderon Press, 2007). He just began a database series on Armenian Orphans in the Aftermath of WWI. He is the author of “Memory Faultlines” which appeared in the July 2006 issue of Ancestors, the journal of the British National Archives.

A Yerevan-based American-Armenian political analysts spoke today about weak signals coming from the Turkey’s government and its army, which he said indicate that they have started to comprehend the wisdom of lifting the blockade of Armenia.
The political analyst, Richard Giragosian, called these signals ‘revolutionary.”
Speaking to a news conference Mr. Giragosian argued that the passage of a resolution by the US Congress recognizing the 1915 Armenian genocide would have no impact on Washington’s relationships with Ankara ‘because they are already bad.’
Mr. Giragosian further said that Turkey and Armenia can normalize their relations only through boosting economic ties, because ’Turkey needs Armenia as an economic partner to stabilize the situation in its eastern Kurdish-populated areas.”
Mr. Giragosian also reiterated fears that Turkey’s accession to EU with its 75 million population may pose a serious threat to Europe’s integrity, but he said Armenia would benefit from a Turkish EU membership, ‘because Ankara would have to reduce its military spending and cut its armed forces.’
According to Mr. Giragosian, Armenia may act as a go-between between Iran on one hand and the USA and Europe on the other hand.

Il y a vingt ans aujourd’hui...l’Europe marquait de sa reconnaissance le génocide des Arméniens

Il y a 20 ans aujourd’hui, le 18 juin 1987, le Parlement européen réuni en session plénière à Strasbourg devenait la première institution internationale majeure à reconnaître le génocide des Arméniens, en adoptant une résolution historique « Pour une solution politique de la question arménienne ». Après d’amples débats et en dépit des immenses pressions exercées par la Turquie et ses supplétifs, le législateur européen choisit d’apposer la juste qualification à ce premier génocide des temps modernes et apporta ainsi une victoire déterminante au combat pour la Justice que menaient depuis des années les Arméniens, en Europe et à travers le monde.

92nd Anniversary Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide: Reconciliation is impossible !

Further to the commemoration ceremonies or meetings I have personally been able to take part on April 24th, I must say that I have been quite in disgareement - not with the tone - but with the underlying meaningful core ideas of various speeches held by officials of Armenian diaspora in the region of Lyon, France.

Key quotes as I registered them: " There will be no reconciliation without dialogue (Decines, France, April 29th)". " To establish a real dialogue, 2 parties should be involved (Lyon, France, April 24th)".

I think the key finding of 2007 can be summarized as follows: "1,500,000 + 1". If Hrant Dink's murder has proven us one thing is that there is no reconciliation possible.

As a matter of fact, what is unforgivable cannot be forgiven. We would be lying to ourselves and to the world if we pursue in this direction. No one can deny that We have an historical repsonsability in front of all citizens from all nations around the world. We can mislead the entire world. Whatever Turkey does or does not do, there is no dialogue possible.

There can be no reconciliation.

Adleroglou persiste et signe !

Adleroglou appelle maintenant a la reconsitution de l'empire ottoman.
Dans son dernier editorial au Figaro, Il nous presente la Turquie comme la seule civilisation ayant réaliser l'amalgame entre l'Occident et l'Orient.
Je passe sur les details: "la toute nouvelle et bien remarquable diplomatie saoudienne", " triumvirat réformateur qui occupe à présent le de­vant de la scène à Riyad, constitué du roi Abdallah et de ses deux demi-frères, Saoud, le ministre des Affaires étrangères, et Turki, l'ancien chef des services de renseignement", etc... C'est sur les triumvirats ne rappellent pas des bons souvenirs a tout le monde.
Il conclut enfin que: "seuls les Turcs et les sunnites arabes hanafites et chaféites pourront garantir le tournant anti-intégriste de l'Arabie saoudite. Cela se prononce en clair, Empire ottoman. Peut-être ce mirage se dissipera-t-il lui aussi ; il n'em­pêche, il de­meure beau et apaisant dans une région qui en a bien besoin".
Ce qui me ramene a poser la quesion suivante: Combien touches-tu Alexandre Adler ? Combien as-tu facture cette fois-ci ? Combien la Turquie te paie-t'elle pour defendre sa politique ?

Oneworld comments on Bardizag posts about Hrant Dink's murder

The Oneworld Multimedia Blog contains a comment about one of my previous post written after Hrant Dink's murder. The blog is managed by Armenia-based British journalist and photographer Onnik Krikorian, and has links to other news, information and blogs.

Here's the comment:
" Bardizag, a blog named after the Turkish town where its two bloggers originally hailed from, is not surprised, and argues that it is ultra-nationalism and hostility towards minorities, especially Armenians, that defines the modern-day secular Republic. Bardizag also addresses the issue of ultra-nationalism in Trabzon".

Combien tu touches, Alexandre Adler ? Combien la Turquie debourse-t'elle pour te faire ecrire cela ?

Malheureusement publié le 27 janvier 2007 dans "Le Figaro", le dernier "torchon" d'Alexandre Adler, adepte reconnu du panturquisme, amene une question: Combien tu touches, salopard ?
Combien tu touches pour parler des "terribles massacres de Turcs lors des guerres balkaniques, dans le Caucase, et surtout lors de l’effondrement global de l’Empire ottoman à partir de 1918".

Combien tu touches pour parler des "démocrates turcs" et de la "haute civilisation d’Istanbul".

Combien tu touches pour ecrire que l'Armenie est "un pays violent, agressif et inepte".

Comme tu es fourbe en invoquant la memoire de ton défunt ami le colonel général Haïdar Aliev, "Héros de l’Union soviétique, fils de mollah, excellent connaisseur de la poésie persane et patriote turc à la Mustafa Kemal, qui synthétisait ces courants culturels apparemment incompatibles, en tout cas aujourd’hui, en un espoir uto­pique pour demain : la grande alliance des trois cultures russe, turque et persane dans un nouvel ensemble producteur de laïcité et de démocratie". Les innombrables familles brisées, sur le territoire de l'ancienne URSS, par cet ex-chef du KGB apprecieront....

Il n'y a pas de mots pour vous decrire M. Adler. Et surtout, surtout, ne citez plus jamais publiquement la memoire de Hrant Dink pour justifier vos theories incultes et malhonnetes.

LA TURQUIE ASSASSINE HRANT DINK

Hrant Dink, le rédacteur en chef d’Agos, journal arménien de Turquie,
vient d’être assassiné devant les locaux de son quotidien.
Les circonstances du crime ne sont pas encore élucidées mais on sait qu’au moins une personne – en fuite – est impliquée. M. Dink a été atteint de deux balles dans la tête, deux dans l’abdomen et six douilles ont été retrouvées à proximité.

Hrant Dink s’était fait connaître par les critiques modérées qu’il avait formulées envers son pays, notamment en raison du traitement des minorités et de la liberté d’expression en Turquie. Il était perçu en Occident comme un partisan de la modernisation et de l’européanisation de son pays.

Cet acte délibéré vise à maintenir la communauté arménienne dans un climat de terreur afin de bien montrer à tous qu’il estdes lignes à ne pas franchir en matière de liberté d’expression et d’affirmation du génocide des Arméniens.
